New Fire Danger Rating warning system this season

The Fire Danger Rating warns of the level of bush fire threat on any given day, based on the forecast weather conditions. It is an early indicator of the potential danger, should a bush fire start.

This season, a new rating system is being adopted which more accurately reflects the dangers associated with the bushfire season.

SEWS - What is it?

SEWS is the Standard Emergency Warning System and is a distinctive sound broadcast over radio and television immediately before an important safety message.

High fire potential for 2009-10 southern bushfire season

Above normal fire potential is expected over most of the south-east of Australia in the coming months. Bushfire CRC scientists at the Bureau of Meteorology have worked with fire managers around Australia to evaluate the fire potential of the upcoming season for the southern parts of Australia.

Very High fire danger hits this weekend

Although spring has just sprung, the region will be entering a very high fire danger period this weekend.

Temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid 20's over both days with winds reaching 30-50km/h.

Navex 09

Plans are well underway for the running of Lake George Zone's annual exercise, Navex.

This year, Navex will be held on the weekend of the 7-8 November 2009.

Bushfire Danger Period declared from 1 September

The commencement of the bushfire danger period for Queanbeyan City and Palerang Shire has been brought forward to 1 September 2009.

Persons living in these local government areas will need to contact the NSW Rural Fire Service for permits to burn after this date.

New Radio Rollout

The new radio rollout is about to happen with the Zone.

All trucks have now been scheduled in and Captains advised. Fittings commence on 13 July 2009.

Every brigade will be able to send their Field and Training Officers to a workshop to be held in each Group in the next 2-3 weeks to learn how to use the new Motorola radios.

Bushfire danger period extended

The bushfire danger period for Palerang and Queanbeyan City has been extended until 30 April 2009.



Navex 08

The Lake George Zone's annual exercise, Navex, will be held on 8-9 November 2008, in a secret location!

Navex 08 will combine navigational skills with scenarios, putting the firefighters through their paces as they complete several tasks over the weekend.

15 teams have nominated this year and it looks to be one of the biggest and best events ever held in the Zone.

Spate of fires is a timely reminder

A recent spate of fires over the weekend in the Palerang Shire serves as a timely reminder for residents to be vigilant about fire safety in the lead-up to the bushfire season.

All members of the public are asked to be prepared for this bushfire season by ensuring their properties are protected against fire and to be mindful when disposing of cigarette butts.

Local RFS members to participate in NSW State Championships 13-14 September

This weekend six members from the Operations Support Group will travel to Tweed Heads to participate in the running of the Rural Fire Service State Championships.

Four members will conduct radio communications for the weekend, one will be an official and another will perform the scheduling, ensuring that all teams are sent to their correct events.

The State Championships are held every two years and the Operations Support Group has provided radio operators and officials for the past three Championships.

Bushfire Danger Period due to commence 1 October

The bushfire danger period is due to commence in Queanbeyan City and Palerang Shire on 1 October 2008.

If you are planning to light a fire in the open during this time, you will need a permit. Permits are available from your local Rural Fire Brigade Captain, or alternatively contact the Fire Control Centre on (02) 62971840 for advice.

Tralee hazard reduction - Sunday 6 July

Residents within the Queanbeyan City local government area may see smoke and fire units on Sunday as a 50 hectare hazard reduction takes place at Tralee.

Hazard reductions occur during the winter season to reduce the risk of fire when summer hits. This planned burn will also allow new Rural Fire Service members to gain valuable experience in a controlled environment.

Life Membership awarded to long-term communications expert

John James "Jack" Sealey AFSM was awarded Life Membership of the Operations Support Group (OSG) within the Rural Fire Service at this year's OSG Annual General Meeting.

Jack is a long-term member of the RFS with a distinguished service spanning over 4 decades.

Jack is well known within this Zone and our thanks go out to him for his long years of dedication to the service.

Fire Danger Period has ended

The Bushfire Danger Period ended at midnight on 30 April 2008. Fire permits are no longer required.

Weekly pager tests

Weekly pager tests will re-commence on Friday Mornings at 0905 hrs, starting with Friday 2nd May 2008.
