This Control Centre is manned during normal business hours each weekday by the Zone Manager, Operations Officer, Learning & Development Officer, one Administration staff member and one Fire Mitigation Officer. The Community Safety Officer currently operates out of Braidwood.

After-hours call-outs is conducted by designated Group Officers within the District, while the Operations Support Group (OSG) is available to open and run the Fire Control Centre 24 hours per day.

The Fire Control Centre was officially opened by Commissioner Phil Koperburg on 19 February 2000. Before this, the Fire Control Centre was located in some very small rooms at the rear of the Yarrowlumla Shire Council office, in Farrer Place, Queanbeyan.

What happens when I dial 000?

When you dial 000, the Telstra operator will ask you if you require Police, Fire or Ambulance. 000 calls for fires within the district, are usually received by the NSW Fire Brigades Communications Centre in Wollongong. However, other centres throughout Australia can receive calls should the Wollongong centre be unable to. Some calls are also taken by the ACT Emergency Services Authority in Canberra, due to our close proximity to the ACT.

The Communications Centre will take the details of the fire and log the call, and pass the information on to us at the Fire Control Centre. Once we have been given the details of the call, we dispatch the closest/fastest Fire Brigade to the address.
